I’m sure it comes as no surprise, but the sure-fire way to keep your mouth healthy is to adopt and maintain a good oral hygiene routine. You know what that means – brushing twice daily and replacing your brush every three months or when it wears out; flossing once a day with a floss that allows you to going comfortably between your teeth; and using a mouthwash (if you’ve decided that’s right for you).
Another way to keep your mouth healthy is to watch what you eat. Not only does what you eat affect your dental health, but it affects your overall health as well. Eating a balanced diet promotes healthy teeth, healthy gums, and thus a healthy mouth! Also, the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests keeping snacking in-between meals to a minimum in relation to keeping a healthy mouth. If you do need a snack to hold you over, go for the veggies, cheeses, yogurts and fruits.
Lastly, a healthy mouth is a tobacco-free mouth. If you want to keep your mouth healthy, avoiding tobacco is a key factor. Tobacco products include cigars, cigarettes, pipes, and chewing tobacco. Numerous studies have shown that your risk of gum disease increases by smoking because the smoking inhibits the good cells from doing their job in keeping the mouth healhy.
So there you have it! Stick to the basics – brushing, flossing, rinsing – eat healthy, and stay away from the tobacco. Follow those few tips and you’ll find that your mouth and it’s health will thank you!
