Should You have Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth can be a tricky thing. Some of us have them, and they aren't an issue. Some of us never get them........and some of us are told we need to have them taken out before they cause damage to our surrounding teeth. So, where do you fall in this category?
You may not need to have your Wisdom teeth removed if they are healthy, have grown in fully, if they are positioned correctly and your bite is lined up with the opposite teeth, or if they can be cleaned as part of your daily hygiene practice.
To bad we all can't just have "normal" wisdom teeth. Sadly, this is not the case for a lot of people.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars in the very back of your mouth. As stated previously, some people never even see their wisdom teeth grow through, or some may not even have both top and bottom.
If your dentist recommends that you have your wisdom teeth extracted, its most likely because they don't have room to grow properly inside your mouth and can cause problems. Wisdom teeth can erupt at various angles in the jaw, sometimes even horizontally. Other times they may only partially emerge through the gums.......or they may never come up and stay completely hidden. The problem with them staying hidden is that for whatever reason they aren't able to emerge normally, they can become impacted, or trapped within your jaw.
If the wisdom teeth only partially come through the gums, it leaved the area exposed and created a passageway. This area, because of its location, can be hard to see and clean properly. That in turn makes it a magnet for bacteria growth---which leads to gum disease and infection in the mouth.
